An outdoor wedding in Romania means a ceremony under open sky, among forests, hills or a lake, with a party that moves freely between garden, terrace and barn. It has stopped being a trend and become one of the most requested formats among couples who want a relaxed, personal day. This guide covers venues, seasons, weather plans, budget, décor, food, music and photography, based on the outdoor weddings I have photographed.
Why an outdoor wedding is more than a trend
At every outdoor wedding I notice the same things: guests relax faster, conversations flow more naturally, and children have room to play without disturbing anyone. Natural light makes portraits look warmer and more alive. If you hesitate between a hall and an outdoor space, think about what matters most: a relaxed atmosphere, photographs in natural light, freedom of movement for guests, or the chance to personalise the whole space.
Choosing the perfect venue for an outdoor wedding
The venue is usually one of the first decisions after the date. Beyond looks, there are practical criteria that a photographer checks every time: the quality of natural light at different hours, the variety of backgrounds, access to electricity for evening lighting and music. Visit the venue at the same hour of day as your event to see how the light actually looks.
Checklist for choosing the venue
- Capacity: enough room for tables, dance floor, buffet, lounge and stage. Ask for the layout plan.
- Weather plan B: a professional tent, a canopy or an indoor hall in case of rain. Clarify in the contract what happens if you must move inside.
- Natural light: check the direction of the sunset, which is essential for photographs.
- Recent feedback: read Google and Facebook reviews from the last 12 months, and ask 2–3 couples who married there.
- Access and parking: can guests arrive easily, is there enough parking, is a shuttle needed?
- Accommodation nearby: hotels or guesthouses within 10–15 minutes for guests from other cities.
- Infrastructure: power for the DJ or band, evening lighting and catering. Check the mobile signal if the venue is in nature.
- Noise restrictions: some venues in nature or residential areas have decibel limits or closing times. Verify before signing.
Which season is best for an outdoor wedding in Romania?
Summer (June–August): the classic season
Summer is the most popular season. Long days mean more natural light, and sunset after 9 pm gives you golden hour exactly during the party. Hot days need shade and water for guests.
Autumn (September–October): the photographer's favourite
Autumn is my favourite season for outdoor weddings. Gold and rust colours create a backdrop that is impossible to replicate, temperatures of 18–24°C are comfortable for guests, and the light is soft. September and May are the best months in Romania.
Spring (May): flowers as natural décor
May gives the most generous natural floral décor, with blooming orchards, magnolias and lilac, pleasant temperatures and better availability than in peak season. Spring rain can arrive suddenly, so keep a plan B.

Outdoor wedding budget: what to expect
A common myth is that an outdoor wedding is automatically cheaper than one in a hall. The truth is more nuanced: the venue can be cheaper, but extra logistics can make up the difference quickly.
- Venue rental: about 500 to 5,000 EUR depending on type. Premium dedicated venues price the rental separately from catering, so always check what the package includes.
- Tent or covered structure: a professional event tent (Silhouette or Clear Span type) for 100 people starts from about 2,500–3,500 EUR.
- Typical total: a realistic estimate for 100 guests near Bucharest is between 15,000 and 35,000 EUR, depending on venue, menu and services. For a detailed estimate, use my wedding budget calculator (in Romanian).
How to handle the weather
Weather is the biggest worry of couples planning an outdoor wedding. The good news is that Romanian summers have many clear days between May and September. Even so, a solid plan B is required. The safest solution is a professional event tent, not an improvised structure. Alternatively, choose a venue with both an outdoor space and a functional indoor hall, such as Pădurile Regale, TreeHouse or Narrative Events.
In my experience, the months with the most requests for outdoor weddings are June, September and increasingly May. If you want a popular date, a weekend in June or September, book the venue as early as possible.
Décor and personalisation
- Floral arch or chuppah for the ceremony: the central element of an outdoor ceremony and the most photographed object of the day. Choose a design that harmonises with the vegetation around.
- Lighting: string lights, lanterns and candles for the evening. Check that the venue has power for all of it.
- Seating: long tables and mixed seating create a relaxed look that photographs very well.
Food: between formal and modern
An advantage of outdoor events is the freedom to be as formal or informal as you like. A buffet or interactive stations (live cooking, cocktail bar, dessert station) work very well, because guests move between areas and socialise more. From the weddings I have photographed, couples increasingly choose a mix: a formal seated dinner moment followed by a cocktail bar or dessert station where guests can stand up and mingle.
Dress code and communication with guests
State clearly in the invitation that the wedding takes place outdoors. Mention the surface (grass, gravel, wood), so ladies know whether high heels are a good idea. Suggest lighter fabrics in summer and a wrap for evenings. Gentlemen can leave their ties at home if you choose a relaxed dress code.
Transport and accommodation
The more remote and special the venue, the more important access becomes. Create a list of accommodation nearby and include it in the invitation or on your wedding website. For guests from other cities, consider a shuttle between the venue and the hotel, especially for the evening.
Keeping insects away
Insects are inevitable at nature venues. Fill a few baskets with citronella candles or insect spray, and place citronella torches around the perimeter. Flowers such as lavender, mint and marigold also help.
Why photographers love outdoor weddings
An outdoor wedding is also the dream of photographers. Natural light, landscapes and atmosphere are the best friends of the lens. Outdoor weddings also bring specific challenges: light changes quickly, there is no ceiling to bounce a flash from, and backgrounds need to be chosen with care. That is why experience in natural light matters more than a specialisation in exteriors.
A few things I do at every outdoor wedding: I scout the venue in advance and note where the sun will be at each moment, I plan the couple portraits for the hour before sunset, and I agree with you a plan B location for portraits in case of rain. See my wedding photography in Romania.
Music for an outdoor wedding
Whether you choose a DJ or a live band, they are responsible for the mood on the dance floor. Check sound limits at the venue and ask the band for a quieter set during dinner. A trio for the ceremony, followed by a band for the party, works very well outdoors.
FAQ: Outdoor wedding in Romania
Răspunsuri scurte la ce mă întreabă cel mai des cuplurile. Dacă nu găsești aici ce cauți, scrie-mi.
The cost varies by venue, number of guests and level of service. A realistic estimate for 100 guests near Bucharest is between 15,000 and 35,000 EUR. Dedicated venues such as barns or forest estates have separate rental prices, so check what the package includes.
September and May are the best months. September offers pleasant temperatures (18–25°C), beautiful autumn colours and long enough days for natural light. May offers flowers and fresh greenery. June is also very popular.
Use citronella candles on tables, insect spray in decorative baskets for guests, flowers that repel insects (lavender, mint, marigold) and citronella torches around the perimeter.
The Bucharest area offers a remarkable selection: Pădurile Regale in Corbeanca, Narrative Events and The Green Spot in Ciolpani, TreeHouse in Cosoba, Moonfields in Snagov, By The Lake in Căciulați and Domeniul Știrbey in Buftea.
Every outdoor wedding needs a plan B. The best plan is a venue with both outdoor space and a functional indoor hall, or a professional tent. Clarify in the contract what happens if you have to move inside.
A photographer exclusively for outdoors is not required, but an experienced photographer in natural light is essential. Light changes quickly outdoors, there is no ceiling flash, and the backgrounds need attention.
There is no general limit. It depends on the venue. Pădurile Regale can host 100–300 guests, TreeHouse works for 100–200, and Narrative Events and The Green Spot are good for 100–250.
