Some venues impress with size and others with story. Petry Estate Winery in Călimănești, Mureș County, belongs to the second kind: an 18th-century manor, a vineyard on the hill, a park with trees more than 300 years old and a lake with water lilies, all in one place, in the Târnava Mică valley.
I came here for the after-wedding session of Noemi and László, whose wedding I had photographed at Panorama Events in Sfântu Gheorghe. I spent several hours on the estate, from warm afternoon light until the blue hour, and left convinced it deserves a full article.
Where Petry Estate Winery is
The estate is in the village of Călimănești, no. 40, in the south of Mureș County, in the Târnava Mică valley, a wine region with a long tradition that is far less crowded by the wedding industry than the surroundings of Cluj or Brașov. It is about 40 minutes by car from Târgu Mureș and half an hour from Sighișoara, accessible for guests from central Transylvania and secluded enough to feel like you have left the city. It is not a place you find by accident, so add the map to your invitation. Compare it with other wedding venues in Romania.
Simén Manor: 1740, Petőfi and the Petry family
The central building is Simén Manor, built from 1740 by the noble Simén family. It stayed in the family until the Second World War. The best-known episode is also the most moving: on 30 July 1849 the poet Petőfi Sándor had his last meal here, before the battle of Albești, in which he disappeared. A marble plaque marks the moment, and the estate’s restaurant is called POET.
After nationalisation the manor served as a public building and then as the village cultural centre. In 2006 it was bought by the Petry family from Târgu Mureș and, between 2007 and 2016, restored into what you see today: a winery, a restaurant, an event space and accommodation. For photography this history is visible in the material: old plaster, a portico with columns, a stained-glass door, stone balustrades, steps worn by time. If you like venues with a past, the feeling is close to Zabola Estate and Bethlen Castle.

The spaces and how many guests fit
The estate has about 2.5 hectares of green space and several areas that can be used separately or together. According to the venue’s published information:
- The manor ballroom: up to about 100 guests
- The winery cellar: around 60 seats, suited to small dinners and tastings
- The terrace by the vineyard: about 70 people
- The terrace under the chestnut trees: around 90 people
- The green space by the lake: up to about 120 guests
This is a venue for medium-sized weddings. With more than 120–130 guests, talk to the venue first about combining spaces, or look at a venue built for large numbers, such as The Island in Târgu Mureș. For short guest lists the proportions work in your favour: a wedding of 80 guests does not get lost, and in photographs people are close to each other.
The winery, the wines and the POET restaurant
Petry Estate is a real winery with its own vineyard on the hill above the manor. The signature grape is Fetească Regală, alongside Muscat Ottonel, Riesling, Pinot Noir and blends. For a couple, the wine at your wedding can come from the place where the wedding is held. Tastings can be arranged by appointment, a good idea for a pre-wedding dinner with both families. The POET restaurant has its own hall and a terrace overlooking the lake and the vineyard, and public reviews consistently praise the food.
Accommodation for guests who travel
According to reports about the venue, there are about 22 rooms with around 50 beds, plus a relaxation area with a jacuzzi. Confirm the exact number of rooms available on your date directly with the venue. Staying where the party was means guests do not have to drive back at night, and it opens an option I often recommend: a photo session the next morning or at sunset, with far more time than on the wedding day itself.

Petry Estate through a photographer’s lens
I photographed Noemi and László’s after-wedding session here. In one sentence: you have four completely different settings less than three minutes’ walk from each other.
- The stone terrace: massive balustrades, urns with flowers and an open view of the lake and the vineyard. Good for formal portraits and for wide frames where the couple is small in the landscape.
- The vineyard: rows of vines climb the hill, and at golden hour the light passes through them from the side. Some of the best frames of the day came from here.
- The garden and hydrangeas: a ready-made setting for close portraits and details.
- The manor facade and entrance: the portico, the stained-glass door and the stairs show where you were, not only how you looked.
Two technical notes. The blue hour is spectacular here, so keep 15 minutes in your schedule for it. And the estate looks extraordinary from a drone, with the manor, lake, vineyard and village church in the same frame. Tell me in advance if you want aerial photographs.

Who Petry Estate suits
It suits you well if you want a wedding of 60–120 guests, like buildings with real history, care more about wine and food than special effects, want some guests to stay overnight and imagine a day outdoors, with the ceremony in the garden and the party moving inside in the evening. See also my notes on outdoor weddings in Romania. It suits less if you have more than 130 guests, need everyone to arrive in 10 minutes from a big city or want a modern hall with large technical production. Other options in the county are Teleki Castle and the Haller Castle barn.
Practical tips
- Visit at the hour of your event. The light at 18:00 in July is nothing like September, and here everything happens outdoors.
- Ask for a written rain plan. A garden ceremony and a terrace cocktail need a clear scenario B.
- A civil ceremony outside the town hall needs the registrar’s approval, so read my guide to getting married in Romania.
- Book 12–18 months ahead for the warm season. Read the wedding planning guide for the full timeline.
